About the Artist

blog_georgewoollard1-620x413My life’s story began on Cape Cod in 1946. It was a wonder of smells and sights. My father was a scientist, actually a geophysicist and a devoted teacher. And my mother had a deep appreciation for beautiful things. We later moved to Madison Wis. where my father headed up the geophysics dept. at UW.  He was then invited to start a new institute at the University of Hawaii in 1962.  I have basically lived in the islands ever since.  Hawaii is full of natural beauty.  It is healthy here with clean air, clean water, trade winds, a benign climate, friendly people and color everywhere.  In addition, I was lucky to have a family that supported my art and loved to travel.  We spent many happy days camping in Europe and I painted and studied art everywhere we went.

With a solid foundation in European art and history, I began my studies in earnest around 1965. First, I spent a year in Aix-en-Provence Fr. painting in the footsteps of Cezanne.  Then I earned first a BFA in painting and then an MFA in printmaking at the University of Hawaii, Manoa. This was followed by a two-year artist’s fellowship in Paris Fr. where I worked on my prints at the Cite Internationale des Arts and the Atelier 17.  There was a short interval studying marble carving in Italy and then I got a teaching  fellowship at the Lacoste School of the Arts in southern France.  In lock step with my growth as an artist, has been my development as a teacher. These two paths together make up my artistic career. I am equally passionate about both. The best way to learn something is to  teach it.

I have had 28 solo shows and have been in approximately 320  group, invitational or juried exhibitions. Venues have included  galleries and museums in France, Germany, Italy, Norway, Finland, Korea and Japan as well as spaces  in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles  and Honolulu.

My work can be found in the collections of the Honolulu Museum of Art, The Hawaii State Art Museum, The Persis Collection, The University of Hawaii, The State Foundation on Culture and Art, Queens Hospital, Kaiser Foundation, HMSA, The Four Seasons Resort, Norwegian Cruise Lines, Disney Resorts, Exxon Corp., The Biblioteque Nationale des Art, Paris Fr. and numerous private collections both here and abroad.
